Expressing Love Beyond Duty:
“Duty will Build the House but only Love can Build the Home”

Mark 12:28-34

One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” 29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” 32 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions. Mark 12:28-34
1. Move From Duty to Delight: LOVE LIVES BEYOND OBLIGATION
“And so the Lord says, “These people say they are mine. They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. And their worship of me is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote” Isaiah 29:13 (NLT)
2. Move from Duty to Discovery: LOVE REQUIRES CURIOSITY
“Husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way” 1 Peter 3:7
3. Move from Duty to Discernment: LOVE LISTENS FOR WHAT ISN'T BEING SAID
"The purposes of a person's heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out." Proverbs 20:5
4. Move from Duty to Dwelling: LOVE = PRESENCE
“And The Lord said, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."
Then Moses said to Him, "If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here." Exodus 33:14-15
““The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).” Matthew 1:23
5. Move from Duty to a Deliberate Decisions to love: LOVE RUNS TOWARD BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So, they began to celebrate.” Luke 15:20-24
