Jesus is the Light

Pastor Brian Greenleaf

John 8:12-20

2 Important truths of light

  1. It is -
  2. It everything around it

Verse 12: A claim and a promise

Claim: I am the light of the world

Promise: All who follow me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life

Jesus’ light

  1. Never
  2. Never

Martin Luther King Jr.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.”

C.S. Lewis

Don’t shine so others can see you. Shine so that through you, others can see Him.”

Sermon Talks

  1. Read John 8:12-20 as you prepare to work through the sermon talks.
  2. Think of a time when you were stuck in darkness. What was the situation? How did you feel when you finally received light?
  3. Based on His statement, “I am the light of the world,” what can you deduce about Jesus?
  4. What is the promise of verse 12? What is the condition (requirement) of the promise?
  5. What are the ways you personally know that Jesus has given you “the light of life?”
  6. Why do you think so many people are stuck in darkness? Why do you think so many are satisfied to be walking in darkness?
  7. Why are we sometimes tempted to hide our struggles or remain in the darkness rather than letting Christ’s light expose and heal them?
  8. Read the following verses: Psalm 27:1, Psalm 119:105, Matthew 5:14-16, Ephesians 5:8. What do these verses say about our need for the light and what we are to do with that light?
  9. How do you respond to the illustration about the soccer ball, baseball, stick, and nails? Who’s hands are you in? The world? God’s?
  10. How can you tangibly extend and reflect the light of Christ to others this week?
  11. In what way should these verses affect your prayer life?
  12. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in a time of prayer. Begin by praising God for who He is and what He has done in your life. Praise Him for your salvation.
